Adam slogged through “Lost” (2021), “Beautiful Mistakes” (2021), “Don’t Wanna Know” (2017), “Cold” (2017), “Sunday Morning” (2002), and “Girls Like You” (2017) complete with Cardi B’s portion of the song. The rest of the show was merely mediocre after the pinnacle of “Payphone”. Your brain would sort of fill it in as a fan but you weren’t really hearing him live. That was another issue that I had with the show was that perhaps the balance was off but there were times you couldn’t pick up exactly what he was signing. His voice with the acoustic music was melodic, strong, and you could understand every lyric.
Song 11 on the setlist was “Harder to Breathe” followed by the song “Payphone” which was performed acoustically. The next 3 songs, “Makes Me Wonder” (2007), “Wait” (2017) and “Maps” (2014), kept up with the formula that Adam performed the older songs better than the new. Yet, the fact still remained that at times he seemed out of breath sometimes taking breaths that skipped whole phrases of music and sang lower than the recordings. “Animals” (2014) and “Love Somebody” (2012) brought some of my faith back into Adam’s performance. “This Love” (2002) and “One More Night (2012) being the best of those mentioned 4. I noticed this especially in the older songs when Maroon 5 was more of a band and less of a studio singer with a backing band. He had that studio energy, intonation, and pitch. The next 4 songs, “This Love”, “Stereo Hearts”, “One More Night”, and “What Lovers Do” saw Adam’s voice seemingly more charged. It was very bland for such an iconic Maroon 5 song. The crowd cheered but as I was listening, I noticed Adam singing an octave lower as if he couldn’t hit those notes he used to. The band led of with “Moves Like Jagger”. However, fans may agree that Adam’s performance was very flat at the Darien Lake concert September 1, 2021. After Maroon 5’s performance at the 2019 Super Bowl, one would assume that Adam Levine would put on an amazing show after 2 years of the covid pandemic.
